Global Warming: Kofi Annan is my Hero
by Matt Gauntt
I never thought I would say this, but I agree wholeheartedly with Kofi Annan.
Although the former Secretary General of the United Nations and I have disagreed on most everything, I finally found a topic that we can agree to shake hands and sing Kum-By-Yah around the fire together.
Global Warming.
Now, dear reader, I know what you are thinking: "Matt, you’ve been very critical of all of these left wing loonies on the topic of global warming, how can you agree with Kofi Annan now? Has someone hit you in the head"?
No, I think Kofi is coming around to my way of thinking.
Mr. Annan (can’t call him Mr. Secretary anymore ’cause he’s just a regular guy now) is now linking the economic impact of global warming to which country has caused the global warming. He is basically proposing that if your country caused global warming, then you should be responsible for economic impacts to those other third world countries that are feeling the effects of global warming.
I agree wholeheartedly - bring on the contract, I’m ready to sign.
Here’s the catch. We have to get all the benefits too.
The Medieval Warm Period, which was generally from 800 AD to 1300 AD was somewhat similar to the warming that we have had in the last century. Let’s look at some of the benefits:
- Higher crop production
- Lower death rate (the "Black Plague" happened during the subsequent "Little Ice Age")
- Higher growth rate for forests
- Greenland was actually green
- It was a period of great discovery
So, if we pay for any "damage" caused by global warming, shouldn’t it be fair that we also get the benefits? Shouldn’t we get the extra crops that are produced? Shouldn’t we get a share in the health benefits that those countries will receive? Perhaps someone could send us a few million board feet of lumber. Maybe we should get Greenland (after it’s green of course, I hate the cold).
This is yet another attempt by global socialists to have the mean, evil, wicked United States give all of our money to third world dictators that are more interested in fancy homes on the French Riviera than actually providing for the benefit of their citizens. It is nothing more that a global re-distribution of wealth.
Mr. Annan, please make the corrections as I’ve outline above to the contract and we’ll be glad to sign. Oh, and by the way, that check the UN got from the United States last month for our share of the UN costs, consider that the last one you will get. Let the Myanmar pay for your annual pension.
