Cheech and Chong
Even when I’m reading it, I find it hard to believe that Cheech and Chong are reuniting.
One cash grab before they retire? Sure, why not?
Cheech Marin, from what we’ve been told, has always been resistant to a reunion, preferring to move for-ward. The pair have been discussing reunions of sorts for years – talk about a film had been going on for at least three years prior to Wednesday’s announcement of a tour.
If you’re not of a certain age, there’s no way I can help you understand what these guys meant to humor-starved kids in the Midwest in the 1970s. I’m sure the slow stoner and the hyper speed freak became tiring roles to play, but for a solid seven or eight years, these guys were one of our doorways to a world outside our own, and gave even a white kid from a small town the realization that in a lot of ways, I had something in common with a Mexican Los Angelino and a Chinese-Scottish Canadian.
That, and they were saying things a lot of us were thinking, and they made us laugh while doing it.
Cheech and Chong’s humor is dated, no question. But something kept me checking all my regular hunting spots online Wednesday, trying to figure out exactly where their tour would be going. I’m not always big on reunion tours, but this might be a chance to pay a little tribute.
